Translating Disease-Based Discovery into Improved Patient Care

Science and medicine have advanced to an unprecedented level of sophistication in analyzing and comprehending brain function. We are able to explore in detail the molecular and cellular basis for normal brain function, as well as for disorders of the nervous system. However, when it comes to finding treatments for people with neurological and psychiatric disorders, our search has only just begun. The need for effective treatments is urgent. Disorders of the nervous system are common and devastating. Without new approaches to understanding diseases of the developing and mature nervous system, these disorders will continue to exact an immense burden of suffering.

The Neuroscience Institute at Stanford (NIS) has made it a top priority to relieve the suffering and enhance the well being of patients with disorders of the nervous system. To meet this goal, the NIS offers a new culture for neuroscience that will accelerate the movement of ideas from initial conception to practical application. This cultural transformation engages scientists, clinicians and their patients in discussions that begin and end with the needs of patients. Barriers to interdisciplinary interaction are being dissolved and the Institute is experimenting with new ways to link academia and industry and to enhance the role that government plays in the events that lead from neuroscience discoveries to treatments for disease.

The NIS benefits from the participation of Stanford's immensely talented faculty and from their desire to collaborate with the best and brightest scientists from around the world. The NIS sees as vital its ability to convene discussions at both the national and international levels. Dedicated to service, the NIS will change forever the lives of patients and their families.
