  1. Vision and mission of the NIS
Monthly Newsletter “Synapse” in video format will summarize the most important new pieces of news and events, and invites faculty input on the entire range of NIS activities and plans
  2. National Advisory Council Report --
    please read the
     report document
  3. NIS Charter -- a document in evolution, Dean Pizzo and directors – a draft version will soon be communicated to the Chairs and to the faculty at large
    1. Aim is to define how best for departments and Institutes to cooperate in all aspects of their academic missions, including fundraising
    2. The Institutes will build and maintain interdisciplinary and cross departmental programs and support the work of the faculty in both fundamental and disease relevant neuroscience research and training.
  4. Facilities plans
    1. Arastradero – off site location, near VA Palo Alto – to open next summer
    2. Space for core facilities and for the recruitment of new faculty
      1. Molecular and cellular biology of synapse and circuit function, with an emphasis on developing tools to image function
      2. Malenka/Garner/Senior recruit/ 2 or 3 additional recruits
      3. SIM1 – bring the Arastradero team to campus
      4. Additional plans to be formulated by the faculty and working closely with the Steering Committee.  We expect to enlarge upon the circuit biology theme developed at Arastradero, invest in theoretical neuroscience, and relocate all of part of selected Working Groups that would benefit most by interacting with these faculty
    3. Expand the theme developed at the Arastradero site, and efforts in theoretical neuroscience
  5. Core facilities
    1. Rodent Behavior -- basement of MSLS with a new Director and full time Technician
      1. A facility will also be created at Arastradero
    2. Laser Capture --- 2nd floor of the MSLS building
    3. Neuroimaging --- Arastradero facility
    4. Instrument fabrication - Stephen Smith oversees the efforts of David Proffitt
