Research topics: We want to understand how the brain can be functioning quite normally, and then suddenly, and often unpredictably, during epileptic seizures, switch to an unresponsive state and back again.

Techniques: We study mice and rats, which are good models of human petit mal, non-convulsive seizures that mimic childhood absence epilepsy.  We use behavior, electrophysiology, in vivo imaging, computer simulations and neuroanatomical approaches.

Seeking undergrads for: Academic year, Summer

Location: Flexible, with possibilities for remote or on-campus research projects

Required skills: Coursework - Should have good knowledge of neurobiology.  We can train you in methods.

This lab is particularly interested in mentoring: Undergrads from backgrounds that are underrepresented in STEM

How to apply: Contact Dr. Huguenard (

Project information: Students have helped analyze EEG data, and predicted upcoming seizures using machine learning approaches.  Some projects have involved electrophysiology, including recording from neural circuits in brain slices.
