Graduate Student Teaching Assistant



The Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute’s Neuroscience Undergraduate Research Opportunity (NeURO) fellowship program immerses undergraduates into the world of neuroscience research.

NeURO fellows will work full-time in host labs in the spring and/or summer quarters (depending on the timing of their "flex" quarter). In addition, they will enroll NeURO program courses that teach skills foundational to their success in a lab environment: including scientific literacy and communication in winter quarter, and foundational neuroscience concepts in spring quarter.

The NeURO program was designed to advance and support students who do not previously have laboratory experience, and diverse students from groups underrepresented in STEM fields. Graduate students who have personal or professional experiences related to this goal are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Teaching Assistant will work closely with the Wu Tsai Neuro Scientific Program Manager and the program’s faculty mentors to lead the winter and spring quarter courses. Courses will be based on a curriculum and materials developed by last year's TA, Becky Shi, with modifications as desired.
In addition, the Teaching Assistant will provide mentorship and community building opportunities for the students through the 10 weeks of summer session.

Additional duties may include:

  • Providing feedback on student assignments
  • Meeting with students 1-on-1 to provide mentorship and discuss research progress and assignments


  • Enrolled as a Stanford PhD student in a STEM field with a research focus on neuroscience [rotating students are not eligible to apply]
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Be a self-starter, independent and proactive
  • Genuine interest in science education and communication
  • Prior teaching experience preferred
  • Personal or professional experience related to the advancement of students from groups underrepresented in STEM or students without prior exposure to research preferred
  • Able to commit to winter, spring and summer quarters during the 2020-2021 academic year


25% graduate student Teaching Assistantship for winter and spring quarters of 2021, and 10% Teaching Assistantship for summer quarter of 2021.
