Learning from post-ingestive rewards

Abstract

The progress of a meal is controlled by sensory feedback generated during eating. I will describe our work investigating how these signals are integrated in the caudal brainstem and used to control behavior. A central theme is how feedback from the mouth and gut interacts both during ingestion and over longer timescales through learning.

UC San Francisco

Zachary Knight is a Professor of Physiology at UCSF and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His lab studies the neurobiology of homeostasis, including the regulation of hunger and thirst. Zack received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from UCSF, where he worked with Kevan Shokat, and then performed postdoctoral research in physiology at Rockefeller University, where he worked with Jeffrey Friedman. He returned to UCSF to start his independent lab in 2012.

Sign up for Speaker Meet-ups

Engagement with our seminar speakers extends beyond the lecture. On seminar days, invited speakers meet one-on-one with faculty members, have lunch with a small group of trainees, and enjoy dinner with a small group of faculty and the speaker's host.

If you’re a Stanford faculty member or trainee interested in participating in these Speaker Meet-up opportunities, click the button below to express your interest. Depending on availability, you may be invited to join the speaker for one of these enriching experiences.
