FEI-FEI LI, co-director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, is the winner of the 2019 National Geographic Further Award, which recognizes a leader whose work is “uniquely innovative, timely and impactful—someone who has boldly pushed the boundaries of his or her field and who serves as an outstanding ambassador for that breakthrough work.”
Li, the Sequoia Professor in the Department of Computer Science, is a co-founder and chairperson of the national nonprofit organization AI4ALL, which is dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion in AI education. Her main research areas are in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision and cognitive and computational neuroscience.
As co-director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, she is working to advance AI research, education, policy and practice to benefit humanity by bringing together interdisciplinary scholarship across the university.
She served as the director of Stanford’s AI Lab from 2013 to 2018. During her sabbatical from Stanford from January 2017 to September 2018, she was vice president at Google and served as chief scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud.
