Ann M. Arvin, M.D. is the Lucile Salter Packard Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Microbiology & Immunology, Emerita, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Vice Provost/Dean of Research, Emerita, Stanford University. She served as a research fellow and senior vice president, research at Vir Biotechnology, Inc., 2018-24. Her basic laboratory research has investigated the molecular virology, pathogenesis and immunology of varicella zoster virus, and her clinical research has focused on understanding the immune responses of infants and young children to viral pathogens and vaccines, with continuous NIH funding from 1986. As Vice Provost, she was responsible for Stanford interdisciplinary institutes, research policies, technology licensing and environmental health, 2006-18. She was chief of infectious diseases, Stanford Packard Children’s Hospital, 1984-2006. Her contributions have been recognized by election as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Microbiology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Infectious Diseases Society of America and American Pediatric Society. Her service related to infectious diseases, vaccines and government policy includes the NIAID Director’s Advisory Council; the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, DHHS; the NAS/NRC Committees on Policy and Global Affairs, Science, Technology and Law, Federal Research Regulations, Responsible Science, and the Board on Life Sciences, Chair; NAM Committee on Scientific Uses of Variola Virus, Chair; WHO Steering Committee on Research Related to Measles Vaccines, Chair; NIAID Blue Ribbon Panel on Influenza; President’s Council on Science and Technology H1N1 and Influenza Working Groups; Inter-Academy Partnership Biosecurity Working Group, Chair; NIH ACTIV COVID-19 Vaccines Working Group.
