I study the psychology of technology. My research focuses on developing interventions that leverage the capabilities of social technologies to improve our personal and collective well-being. To achieve this goal, I work closely with community partners to build and test scalable, direct-to-user trainings that help people optimize their engagement with social media, smartphones, and algorithms. These interventions teach people the mindsets, skills, and strategies they need to use technology adaptively. In addition, I use new computational tools like Screenomics to examine how signals of mental health and illness manifest in people’s digital behaviors. By analyzing how media use corresponds to changes in an individuals’ psychological states, I hope to improve psychiatric care by detecting warning signs of psychiatric episodes before they happen.
