Development of an Ultrasound Neuromodulation Therapy to Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis

Millions of Americans suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, 40% of whom have ongoing disease despite the use of currently available therapies. Many more seek non-pharmaceutical treatment options because they fear the adverse effects from immunosuppressive medications, or they have a precondition that precludes them from taking them.

This team is developing the first wearable ultrasound (US) device for the treatment of these inflammatory diseases. The device will use low intensity US to stimulate nerves deep within the spleen that suppress the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, a neural pathway known as the Cholinergic Anti-inflammatory Pathway (CAP). Given the safety and efficacy of their product, we believe that it can be a first line treatment for millions of Americans.
