The ability to remove blood clots from cerebral arteries using a technique called endovascular thrombectomy significantly improves outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke. Endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke due to blockage of a major cerebral artery by endovascular thrombectomy lead to improved outcomes. However, current endovascular devices fail to remove the blood clot causing the stroke in up to 15% of patients and fail to remove it with one attempt in over 50% of patients.
This team’s proposal will develop an entirely new class of ischemic stroke treatment device that will lead to improved clot extraction to improve the success of endovascular thrombectomy.
